Opioid Epidemic in the United States
The increasing and spreading epidemic of the addiction to opioids is sweeping the American nation. From infants, to grown adults, and all the way to elderly people - opioids are controlling and ruining lives.
The increasing percentage of opioid abusers have been able to reflect the pregnant mothers under that category. The heart-wrenching outcome of a baby born from an opioid addicted mother results in the child itself with a co-dependency on the drug. The babies born into the care units usually stay for weeks, "as nurses try to offer them comfort through the tremors, fevers, and seizures." A newborn infant should not have to deal the withdrawals of a drug as their first motions of life.
The age of the opioid addicted reaches the elderly as well. With their aging, elderly people face many physical and mental pains, leading to the prescription of opioid drugs. This treatment leads to addiction and lack of control of the substance.
This problem is blowing up throughout the nation and should be addressed very quickly. The steps and precautions the nation needs to be taken should be acted on as soon as possible.
This epidemic creates a heavy amount of empathy in me for the children born addicted to opioids and the countless people struggling to fight their addiction. I truly believe if our country does not take drastic measures, the lives lost and affected by those addicted will suffer and increase without hesitation. If we don't act now, we will consistently be behind on the issue, rather than staying on top Andy allowing for recovery. Our country is made up of people and we need to love, support, and help those fighting this addiction.
